Vanessa, thanks for getting back to me -- and I apologize for then
letting your message languish in my inbox for over a week.
(I'm Cc'ing to csped because that seems to have been what
Dr. Howland did with one of my previous messages, and -- maybe
it will save a bit of trouble in forwarding?)
I recognize that it's several weeks into the semester, and it may
be too late for anything I say to have much effect on your group's
design. However, for the record:
What I like about the current system is that we faculty members
pretty much have total control over our own research/course Web
pages, with the ability to use whatever tools we like to design
and publish content.
What I don't like about the current system is that many things
don't get updated as often as they should, which I suspect in
part is because there's no reasonable way for the webmaster
(Dr. Howland) to delegate this task to one of the support staff
or student workers.
What I hope your group will end up doing is addressing what
I don't like without messing up what I do like. That is ....
I hope you'll come up with something that makes it feasible
for support staff to modify content on the Web site (i.e., it
can be done without knowing J!), without compromising on overall
security, and without locking everyone into using the same system.
I'm vaguely thinking that something along the lines of Blackboard
would be great for the non-technical people, but -- well, I don't
use Blackboard for my courses because for me the benefits don't
outweigh the general annoyingness of having to do everything
through a point-and-click Web-based interface.
With regard to how things should look -- it would be great to have
available a standard style for most department pages, but again,
for individual faculty members' stuff, I'd prefer to have the
option of using the standard style or going my own way.
If I'm not being clear here, of course feel free to write back,
or stop by, with further questions.
Good luck with the project!

Dr. Howland recommended that we consult individual CS faculty members to find out what each of you would be interested in seeing on a new CS department website. I would have liked to have met with you in person, but my free time has been incredibly limited this semester, which is why it has taken me so long to contact you (Apologies!!). So, now the forum is open, what features and/or functionality would you be interested in seeing on a new department website?
